They are many misconceptions about being assertive ... some think that women are not assertive enough and they are passive, while others think that assertiveness manner is genetic... !! and many other misconceptions. Let's have an overview on them.
‘Women are passive’ – many women have started their own business, they have already disproved this assumption. Women are more than capable of taking the initiative and driving an idea forward: passivity is an outdated stereo-type.
‘Assertiveness is a characteristic’. Assertiveness is not genetic - it is not passed down the family tree, nor is it an inherent trait that you either do or don’t have. It is, instead, a mindset that can be developed, a pattern of behaviours and tools that can be learnt and practiced.
‘Assertiveness is linked to aggressiveness’. Aggressiveness and assertiveness are both associated with going for and getting what you want and, as such, the distinction between the concepts can be vague and variable. As a general rule, assertiveness is being able to recognise and pursue your needs without infringing on the rights of others. Aggression oversteps this mark and it’s all about how you do it.
A lack of assertiveness has been recognized as a significant barrier to business development but there is little room for self-doubt or fear, the predominant causes of non-assertiveness, when you are in the driving seat. Assertiveness ensures that the confidence and conviction that you have in your business is communicated effectively; it supports you in pursuing your aims and establishing your business as a credible and valuable enterprise; enables you to commit to and realise your vision.
